Lunch-time Birdies - 01 Oct 2008

Sitting here in the parking lot at Bishop Park, Wyandotte. Its Oct 1 and the first north winds have brought jackets out of the closet. Across the Detroit River at the extreme north end of Hennepin Point (Grosse Ile) a Red-tail Hawk is being harassed by a Sharp-shinned Hawk. Flocks of Double-crested Cormorants are moving northward up the river, and are stopping just upstream of the car. A flock of 12 Ring-billed and 24 Bonaparte's Gulls are feeding on minnows amid the swimming cormorants. After a few minutes the Red-tail floated across the river and soared overhead among the breaking clouds and partial sun, providing a stunning profile against the dark gray clouds behind it. I need to get out and bird... I know, I'll go and clean my binoculars.
