HI-ISO Digiscoping - 3 Nov 2008

I took a drive to Willow Metropark this afternoon to look for the Cackling Geese that Walt Pawlowski reported yesterday. Although a hundred or so Canada Geese were present at Washago Pond I did not see any small geese. I did see a Pintail, a Redhead, and six Ring-necked Ducks among the many Mallard Ducks. A Kingfisher fishing nearby made for a nice consolation prize.

With the sun starting to wane I took a swing through Oakwoods Metropark and marvelled at the sheer numbers (100's) of American Robins moving through the park. A couple of Red-tailed Hawks were roosting in the distant trees, but too far to digiscope.

I decided to stop at the Nature Center and check out the feeders, which were active with Tufted Titmice, Black-capped Chickadees, White-breasted Nuthatches, Downy Woodpeckers, Blue Jays, and Northern Cardinals. Setting the Coolpix P5000 on ISO 400 for the first time ever, I took several digiscoped images of birds coming to the hopper feeder and managed some nice keeper images. Out of the camera the image are extremely grainy and noisy, but cleaned up nicely using Noiseware.
