Early Broad-wing Push - 07 Sep 2022
North winds yesterday caused a push of Broad-winged Hawks (7200) through the Detroit River Hawk Watch late in the afternoon. With similar conditions today I took the chance to run down to Lake Erie Metropark to check out the action. Dunkadoo was showing hundred of Broad-winged Hawks an hour with almost 300 birds reported at 2 pm.
I arrived shortly before 3 pm just as a small kettle appeared overhead. Broad-winged Hawks were flying and a few were low enough to photograph. We'd also see several Sharp-shinned Hawks, American Kestrels, 3 Peregrine Falcons, and several Red-tailed Hawks. The day would end w/ 5300 birds, which is great knowing that we are still 2 weeks from peak migration.
