(Mostly) Birding By Ear - 16 May 2024

Sunny skies and 57F prompted a morning walk at Elizabeth Park in Trenton, MI. Arriving at 8:30 am I headed for the trails along the interior island of trees.

Birds were singing this morning with the sounds of Red-bellied Woodpecker, Great-crested Flycatcher, Eastern Wood-Pewee, and Carolina Wren. Though I tried I couldn't see any of the songsters.

I looped around counter-clockwise at the middle trail and headed to the NE corner of the patch and spotted the female Blue Grosbeak found by Bobby Irwin a few days ago. The bird was high in a snag, overall brown with strong wingbars and conical whitish bill.

My second pass through the middle trail brought the first singing warblers: Tennessee Warbler, Magnolia Warbler, Cape May Warbler and American Redstart. Only the Magnolia Warbler appeared briefly at binocular distance. I would chase a pair of loud Tennessee Warblers but never get any looks at them. I had to settle for opportunistic photos of other birds:

American Robin

Great-crested Flycatcher

Tufted Titmouse,

Rose-breasted Grosbeak

and House Wren.
