Sterling State Park - 03 Oct 1987

03Oct87 Sterling State Pk, MI

1600 Hrs.  Cloudy, cold, breezy, 40F.   Arrived at the park with Mel Stahl, Bob Pettit, and other members of the Erie Shores Birding Association to observe where bluebird houses and nesting boxes have been placed.

Almost 70 boxes have been erected along the nature trails of the park, so we needed to see where they were placed.  The park is void of people today, as it is quite cold for this time of the year.  As we drove into the park i saw an Eastern Meadowlark in the grass along side a hill.  The big lakes along the park are void of birds, save for a gull here or there.

But as we walked back into the marsh and back woods things started coming alive.  Cormorants could be seen in both the water and in the air.  The bird of the  day would have to be Wood Ducks, though, as they were quite numerous in the marsh.  Pairs of woodies could be seen flying low over the water and landing in the large mats of lotus flowers.  Also seen were Great Egrets, Great Blue Heron and Black-crowned Night Herons, American Coots, and a single Cattle Egret.  As we walked along the trails we also found a dead yellow-bellied flycatcher, and later on, a Magnolia Warbler.
