Gibraltar Landfill Shorebirds - 23 Sep 2004

Juvenile shorebirds continue to show nicely at the small ponds next to the Gibraltar Landfill. The above image was digiscoped just as a red truck passed by, hence the blood red water in the background. Today I found five Pectoral Sandpipers, 2 Lesser Yellowlegs, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, two Killdeer, six Least Sandpipers and 1 Semipalmated Sandpiper. Some pics:

Semipalmated Sandpiper (left) next to a Pectoral Sandpiper shows overall brown-black plumage, black short bill, and black legs. The nearby Least Sandpipers show more orange/red in their back and wings and look warmer overall.

This apparent juvenile Greater Yellowlegs can be ID'd by the fresh white spots on the back and feathers, thicker knobby knees

smudgy neck and chest, and bill length slightly longer than width of head and slight upturn.

A half-dozen European Starlings were bathing nearby so I took some digiscoped images.
