Port Huron King Eiders - 21 Nov 2004

21 November 2004 Lighthouse Park, Port Huron, MI

1300 Hrs.  Robin and I drove up to Port Huron to look for King Eiders reported earlier in the week.  Met Wayne Fisher at the beach at Lighthouse Park and he indicated that the birds were moving between the red and green buoys and the mouth of the river.  No sooner had he said this that I saw three birds fly toward the buoys.  King Eiders!  One female and possibly two young males, but not sure.  I tried to digiscope the birds as floated by but only got this somewhat plain image of the female:

The birds flew off soon after toward the horizon and were not seen again.  An immature male Harlequin Duck flew in just as two other birders joined me at the shore’s edge. Also saw Long-tailed Ducks, a single Black Scoter, (5) White-winged Scoters, and Surf Scoters.  Weather was sunny to partly cloudy with temps in the low 50’s.  Nice day to be out!
