30 December 2004 Antrim/Old Mission Christmas Bird Count
0800 Hrs: Cloudy, foggy, calm, 34ºF. Today I’m birding the Central Lake Twp area of the A/OM count circle. This will give me a chance to see my neighborhood.
The day started slow with no birds seen nor heard. The canal connecting Hanley and Intermediate Lakes is spring-fed so it has not frozen. I counted about 180 Mallards in the canal along with 3 Bufflehead.
As the day progressed the town and birds began to show up in earnest. Lots of Bluejays, Chickadees, WB Nuthatches, Cedar Waxwings, House Finches, Crows, Goldfinches, Red-bellied Woodpeckers, and Cardinals were seen in town.
As I drove along Kiessel Rd just N of town I spotted 2 Snow Buntings along the road. Some cows were resting in the snow so I stopped and photographed them.
A couple more Pileated Woodpeckers and a flock of 34 Wild Turkeys helped make the day a success!
Robin and I drove to Elk Rapids at 5pm and met up with the other birders. Tom White birded Old Mission peninsula and saw a Snowy Owl along Old Mission and Center Rds. Apparently the bird has been there since before Xmas but no one bothered to post its presence. Damn!
Bob Carstens showed up shortly after and took our results. His lone bird of the day was a Bonaparte’s Gull but he didn’t want to share the sighting w/ anyone… A second Snowy Owl has been sighted along the breakwall in Elk Rapids and has also gone un-reported. Oh well, maybe in a couple weeks I’ll drive up and look for them.
