29 December 2004 Kalkaska/Mancelona Christmas Bird Count
0800 Hrs: Cloudy, calm, 32ºF. I’m birding the central portion of the CBC from Mancelona down to Kalkaska between US-131 and M-571. I met Lucian Keil on Elder Rd. He owns the property (80 acres) that includes several small lakes/ponds and lots of nice habitat for birds. His wife Lorraine is in charge of Grass River NA. Lucian is a wildlife artist and photographer, and photographed for NASA. His work is in the Blue Heron Gallery in Elk Rapids.

While talking to him on Elder Rd I heard a small flock of Snow Buntings fly overhead. The rest of the day was mostly cloudy with lots of snow on the ground. Roads were plowed very well, but I was reluctant to drive down seasonal roads that were very narrow. Highlights of the count included: tons of Black-capped Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches, White-breasted Nuthatches, a Pileated Woodpecker, Wild Turkeys, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers and lots of snowmobilers…
After the count I met up with Russ Emmons and his wife, Syl, along with Jack and Joanne Keough and Tom (?) at Russ’s place on Covert Rd east of M-571 in Kalkaska.
