Central Lake Hilites - 27 Mar 2005

27 March 2005 Antrim Co.

1000 Hrs.  Happy Easter.  Just received message that a Snowy Owl was seen this morning at Chum’s Corner in Traverse City (US-131 S and US-37).  I drove down there but dipped on it….

However, I did see a Turkey Vulture on the side of the road on M-88 just around the corner from Central Lake.  I drove past it, then backed up a 100 yds then pulled forward and got several shots of it on the ground, in the air, and perched in a tree.  Lots of deer still in the corn fields from last night (dozens…).

1500 Hrs.  Walked down to the canal and got some pics of Common Goldeneye and Mute Swans.  2 pair of Bufflehead, 3 pair Common Goldeneye, a single Hooded Merganser female, and a Muskrat.  The goldeneye were tough to pic as they kept a tree or branch or bush between us at all times.

1930 Hrs.  Robin and I drove up C-65 toward Ellsworth for dinner at the Rowe Inn Restaurant.  On the way we saw a pair of Sandhill Cranes (imm.) fly across the road ahead of us and land in a cornfield next to the large dairy farm.  I got a few pics from a distance, but didn’t have the scope.  A short 100 yards later we drove past a small (8-12) flock of Wild Turkeys in the middle of the road.  Very neat!
