Oakwoods Metropark - 12 Apr 2005

12 April 2005 Oakwoods Metropark, Wayne Co.

1700 Hrs.  Ptly cloudy, breezy, 50ºF;  A slow drive through the park yielded the following:  (8) Rusty Blackbird, (6) pair of Eastern Meadowlarks, (2) pair Eastern Bluebirds, dozens of American Robins, dozens of Tree Swallows, a Gray Catbird, and Northern Flicker.

I walked the Sky Come Down trail near the Nature Center and saw a single Hairy Woodpecker, Canada Goose, Immature Bald Eagle and Osprey soaring overhead.  The Osprey was calling, while the eagle remained silent.

At the Nature Center were several Brown-headed Cowbirds, a Red-bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, (3) Black-capped Chickadees, several Red-winged Blackbirds, and Mourning Doves.

As I photographed birds using the Nikon D70, Sigma 400mm f/5.6, and Nikon SB800 Flash Unit (set on Automatic w/ 85mm setting, Shutter priority at 1/400 sec at f/8) I heard a Carolina Wren in the riverbank area.

On the way out of the park I stopped and listened to the ‘wakka-wakka-wakka’ of a Wilson's Snipe, and watched a Savannah Sparrow feeding along side the road.  Eastern Meadowlarks were flying/singing, Song Sparrows, Tree Sparrows, and an Eastern Towhee.
