Fisherman's Island State Park - 28 May 2005
28 May 2005 Fishermans Island SP, Charlevoix Co.
1300 Hrs. Ptly cloudy, breezy, 60F. Drove to the state park via C-65.
Saw Savannah Sparrows, heard Warbling Vireo, Baltimore Oriole, Song Sparrows.
At the park I walked the dunes toward the island and saw little. A few Song Sparrows, and a Spotted Sandpiper off in the distance. I scared up a couple of Red-winged Blackbirds as I approached nesting areas. A pair of Caspian Terns flew along the shoreline that was being buffeted with winds and a cool mist blew in offshore, leaving the shoreline blanketed in a light fog.
I did not hear any Brown Thrashers like I did last weekend, but did see numerous Killdeer, Common Mergansers, Mute Swans, and a couple more Spotted Sandpipers. I stumbled upon 3 Semipalmated Plovers and they permitted some nice digiscoped images.
I then tried to digiscope a Spotted Sandpiper in the mist,
and as I walked back to the car I saw 6 Caspian Terns sitting on the beach, The fog prevented any decent digiscoping. A pair of Eastern Kingbirds were working the sedges along the shore.
