Pt. Mouillee on a Vespa - 25 Jun 2005

0730 Hrs.  Rode the Vespa for the first time down to Pt. Moo.  Had the backpack with scope/tripod on my back, and the Nikon D70 w/ binocs in the carrier.  Worked great!  Only issue was the gravel/dirt road at the end of Roberts Rd that made for a white kuckle ride into the parking lot.

I walked out the dike to cell 2.  It was hot, humid, 80ºF with temps to reach 97ºF by this afternoon.  A Franklins Gull and 2 Whimbrels were seen earlier in the week, and news of the shorebird fall migration starting prompted me to check things out.

Cell 2 was still a bit high w/ water, but I did see (3) Lesser Yellowlegs and (1) Short-billed Dowitcher across the pond.  4-5 Least Sandpipers were also seen among several Killdeer, 2 Green-winged Teal, and 5-6 Blue-winged Teal.

As I walked toward the lake and backside of Cell 2 I got covered with zillions of Mayflies (Hexagenia sp.).  Swarms of them were everywhere!  It was tough taking pictures as they tended to cover the camera and lens.

There was not much to see along the lakeshore, except for a few Red-winged Blackbirds and the occasional Common Tern, but back on the N. end of Cell 2 I saw a Pied-billed Grebe with 3 babies.  I attempted a few digiscoped images with fair success.

On the way back to the scooter I heard several Marsh Wrens, and a Common Moorhen.  I captured an Eastern Kingbird

and several Northern Rough-winged Swallows roosting on dead branches over the water.
