King Rails! - 23 Jul 2005


0600 Hrs;  Clear, warm, 65ºF, slightly breezy; 

This morning between 6 - 8:30 a pair of KING RAILS were observed by several of us along the far shore of Cell 2.  One adult, one juvenile gave us good looks albeit very far away.  The Cell is dry (just a muddy field) but a small number of shorebirds were still present, including:
 
(1) WILSON'S PHALAROPE
(1) Solitary Sandpiper
several Short-billed Dowitchers
several Lesser Yellowlegs
(3) Greater Yellowlegs
(3) Spotted Sandpipers
several Least Sandpipers
(1) Semipalmated Sandpiper
several Semipalmated Plovers
Green-winged Teal
Caspian Terns
 
Cell 3 is currently hosting an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN near the northeast shore.  Also seen were about 12-15 Semipalmated Sandpipers and (4) Spotted Sandpipers
 
Also seen on the way in and out from Mouillee Creek:
 
Adult and chicks - American Coots, Mudhens, Pied-billed Grebes, Canada Geese, Mute Swans, Wood Ducks
~150 Great Egrets
~50 Great Blue Herons
5 Green Herons
6 Black-crowned Night Herons

Willow Flycatcher
Eastern Phoebe
Common Yellowthroats
