Grand Traverse Birding - 19 Dec 2005

0900 – 1300 Hrs.  Robin and I had to return the rental car to Budget this morning at the airport in Traverse City.  Afterwards we drove M-72 toward Empire and Lake Michigan shoreline.

Just south of Empire off M-22 I spotted a gorgeous immature Rough-legged Hawk perched in a tree along side the road.  I attempted to digiscope it, but an approaching Snow Truck forced me to dive into the car as the hawk flew off, showing its black and white tail and black wing patches.

We then stopped for lunch in Frankfurt, where we watched numerous Bufflehead and Common Mergansers swim among the piers at the mouth of the lake.  A pair of immature Bald Eagles were observed soaring along the lakeshore.

We then stopped in Elk Rapids after an afternoon stop in Traverse City, and digiscoped some Bufflehead in the sub-zero winds at the breakwalls.  The Bufflehead and merganser were digiscoped using my new Canon Powershot A620 7.1MPixel camera w/ the adaptor collar.  Image resolution is 'fine' using lots of compression.
