Saw-whet Owl on Belle Isle - 30 Dec 2005

0900 Hrs.  Robin and I drove out to Belle Isle this morning to look for Saw-whet Owls.  Three had been reported regularly along the Nashua Creek trail next to the zoo by Allen Chartier.

It was cloudy this morning as its been all week long.  I walked the trail and looked among the thickest grape vine masses I could find, and finally saw a single bird roosting up under a mass of vines that had formed a tent.  I had to lie on the ground in order to get a single decent image of the partially asleep owl.  Very cute!

The only other birds seen along the trail were a pair of White-throated sparrows.
