Charlevoix and Antrim Co. Hilites - 11-12 Feb 2006
11 Feb 2006 - Charlevoix Co.
0900 Hrs. Took a drive up M-88 to Fisherman’s Island State Park. It was cold out this morning (3ºF) but skies were clear and light frost on the ground made for a nice morning. Mallards and a few Common Goldeneye and Bufflehead were in the canal of Hanley Lake, but most of the lake was frozen. I missed a few shots of cows backlit w/ sunlight shooting smoke out their noses, but saw a nice horse on a ridge backlit by gray clouds. Magnificent! No photos.

At Fishermans Island State Park I scoped the lake and saw many Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, and a single Horned Grebe in basic plumage. Lots of gulls were flying about, but only Ring-billed Gulls. A few Horned Larks and Snow Buntings flew over the airport in Charlevoix, and a possible hawk, but I couldn’t verify.

1100 Hrs. Robin and I took a drive out to Grass River Natural Area and walked the boardwalk out to the lake. Pretty quiet, but we did hear Red-breasted Nuthatches and a singing White-throated Sparrow. Out at the river a flock of Trumpeter Swans flew off, as did a number of Common Goldeneye.

0815 Hrs. Driving down M-88 toward home, we just left the house and saw a Pileated Woodpecker flying west toward Torch Lake. I’d thought I had been hearing a Flicker out by the lake, but it must’ve been the Pileated.

Pretty quiet driving home, with several Common Ravens seen, followed by American Crows, but I did see a dark phase Rough-legged Hawk just outside Mt Pleasant. Neat, almost all black w/ some brown feathers in the back and wings.
