Pt. Mouillee SGA - 22 Apr 2006

Saturday morning I rode the dikes to check out activity at the Moo.  NO unusual birds were seen this morning, but I had a pretty successful day of photographing birds through both the spotting scope and with the 400mm.

At Siegler Rd. I flushed 2 Wilson's Snipe from the cornfield as I proceeded eastward on the dike.  I managed to catch one in flight:

Canada geese, Mute Swans, American Coots were pretty much everywhere in the Bloody Run and Vermet Units.  I caught this pair of geese in a fly-by:

Blue-winged Teal were scattered about, and really jumpy - I couldn't get close enough to even digiscope them.  But I did get these in a fly-by:

I finally got the chance to capture Song Sparrows through the spotting scope:

Cell 2 has exposed mudflats but only 17 Dunlin  and a pair of Killdeer were the only shorebirds present.  I saw several small flocks (7 & 5) of Greater Yellowlegs, but no Lesser's. No Pectoral Sandpipers were seen, either.

American Coots were everywhere, and I managed a few digiscoped images (one didn't quite like getting its picture taken):

I had a few Black-crowned Night Herons fly overhead:

A small flock of about 20 Bonaparte's Gulls were on the sand spit in Cell 4:

The Huron River had numerous Lesser Scaup and Ruddy Ducks, and I saw a Great Egret in gorgeous breeding plumage (bright green bill) but it was too far for a decent pic.  A Bald Eagle was still on the nest on the north side of river from the Siegler rd parking lot.

A male American Kestrel was working the fields west of US Turnpike Rd, as well as a couple flyover Cooper's Hawks, Sharp-shinned and 1 Broad-winged Hawk.
