Allen Park Baird's Sandpiper - 24 Aug 2006
This evening I stopped by the new shopping mall in Allen Park (Southfield Service Drive between Outer Drive and Oakwood Blvd.) to check out the holding ponds for shorebirds. In the northernmost pond next to the Target Store I found a pair of BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS. I was able to get some nice digiscoped images despite the overcast skies and light rain.
I was also treated to:
(4) Least Sandpipers
(2) Semipalmated Sandpipers
(1) Greater Yellowlegs
(6) Killdeer
(1) Spotted Sandpiper
The Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers made for a nice study in contrast
w/ the Baird's, which are slightly larger, longer-winged and billed than the Semipalmated SP's. Their buff-colored breasts really stand out relative to both the Semi's and the Leasts.
