Red-necked Phalarope in Elk Rapids - 19 Aug 2006

This may be a bit north for most but a RED-NECKED PHALAROPE was seen at 6:30 pm this evening at the Elk Rapids Sewage Treatment ponds in Antrim Co.  The bird (a juvenile, I'm pretty sure) was in the closest pond next to the gate along with the following shorebirds:

(22) Solitary Sandpipers

(6) Greater Yellowlegs

(4) Least Sandpipers

(6) Spotted Sandpipers

I also had a flyover Pileated Woodpecker.

Unfortunately it was too windy/drizzly to digiscope, and the Phalarope was along the near shore among the sparse vegetation.  I did get a few shots of the Solitary Sandpipers through the fence, and they made a nice study in contrast w/ the Spotted Sandpipers that were scattered along the shoreline.

Curiously the other ponds did not appear to have any shorebirds...

The Elk Rapids Sewage Treatment ponds on the Cairn Highway just east of Elk Rapids and US-31.

Its just down the street from Pearl's Restaurant and golf course.
