Cold, Snowy Antrim Co. - 16-17 Feb 2007

16 Feb 2007

1300 – 1600 Hrs.  Driving up to Central Lake along US-127 just north of Lansing Robin and I saw five Rough-legged Hawks.  Two were working a field just south of Mount Pleasant right next to the expressway but I couldn’t pull over due to the snow on the roads.  We also saw at least 4 other Red-tailed Hawks along the way, and one Red-shouldered Hawk outside of Brighton.

Lots of snow on the ground up north.  Temps in the teens, and 2” snow on Friday night and another 3” on Saturday night.  Intermittent snow squalls during the day made for lousy birding.  We saw little other than a pair of American Crows on M-88 just north of Central Lake.

We did go for a short walk at Fisherman Island State Park, but cold and snow chased us back to the car.  But not before I walked out onto the lake and saw ice flows out about a mile from shore.  The dark skies and partial sunshine made for an eery look.  I’ve used one of the pics as a backdrop for a composite image using one of my Snowy Owl pics from Allen Park.

The canal between Hanley and Intermediate Lakes was mostly frozen for the first time I know of.  It wasn’t until 5pm Saturday night that I found a patch of open water on Intermediate Lake with a number Bufflehead and Common Goldeneye.  Despite trying, it was too dark to shoot w/ the Nikon and 400mm.

On the way home we saw a single Common Raven and a handful of American Kestrels and Red-tailed Hawks.
