Where are all the birds today? - 20 Dec 2007

1200 Hrs. I came home for lunch today and took advantage of the first sunshine in a week to try out the Nikon D300. Walking out into the back yard I noticed that there were no birds to be seen anywhere. Another pair of Common Redpolls were at the thistle feeder in the back of the yard yesterday, and one bird had a nice wash of red on its chest, indicating that at least 3 (maybe 4) birds are in the area.

I took a few shots of the empty feeder and some snow on the junipers before walking toward the alley when I spotted an adult Cooper's Hawk roosting on the large pine tree next door. I fired off a dozen shots while it surveyed the area. It then flew up onto a larger perch for a few moments before taking off down the street. I tried to capture some flight shots and could only manage a couple before it disappeared. A real beauty!
