Missed Again! - 22 Feb 2008

Deciding to check out the river again this afternoon I headed down to the foot of Clinton St. here in Wyandotte after work to look for photo ops.

Just as I coasted up to the dumpster in front of the Seaway Bar and Grill a Bald Eagle swooped down in front of the car and picked up a shad off the ice flow. Trying to break, unhitch the seatbelt, open the door, and grab the camera in one motion I could only watch as it lifted off the ice a few feet in front of me and flew off toward the middle of the river. I managed a few flight shots before it landed on the ice flow far from shore. This composite photo was two of about 8 pics I took in succession as it flew away. If only I had arrived about 5 seconds earlier!

Heading down to the foot of Southfield I managed to catch an American Coot swimming away from the pier.

A fly-by Ring-billed Gull gave me a polite nod before disappearing out of focus.

A 1st-year Great Black-backed Gull was wrestling with several 1st-year Herring Gulls for a dead fish out on the ice flows, and made for a nice comparison of young birds, but took off before I could get close enough for a photo.

A small raft of Canvasback were sleeping near the south end of Mud Island, and a single Great Blue Heron was with them.

Driving back toward Bishop Park I got out of the car and walked down to the fishing pier and found a single Redhead, Canvasback and five American Coots near shore. Lighting was not terrific, but the Redhead and Canvasback made for a nice moment.
