Recent Wyandotte sightings - 11-20 Jan 2009

11 Jan 2009 - Robin and I were snowshoeing at Bishop Park in Wyandotte this afternoon and watched as a Peregrine Falcon flew south along Biddle Ave. toward downtown. The bird landed atop the towers on the Wyandotte Municipal Bldg. and roosted on one of the antennae. We returned to the car and drove over to the parking lot and grabbed a few pictures from below the building. We then drove across Biddle and grabbed a couple more pics before heading home.

14 Jan 2009 - I stopped home for lunch at noon and decided to fill the thistle feeders in the back yard. No sooner did I step in the house that the yard was filled with House Sparrows and American Goldfinches. As I looked at the nearest feeder I noticed a Common Redpoll! The other feeder had 3 Redpolls, including a bright rosy male. I spent the next half-hour digiscoping the birds through the window, and managed to get a few keeper images. Woo-hoo!

15 Jan 2009 - Returning home for lunch at noon I found only 1 Common Redpoll at the feeders. As I prepared for my UP trip I heard the quiet 'chip' of an American Tree Sparrow - a first for the yard in Wyandotte.

20 Jan 2009 - Yesterday I found a single American Tree Sparrow hiding under the Arbovitae as I arrived home from work at 5pm. It patiently waited for the rest of the birds to leave before moving to the feeders in the late twilight. Today a pair of birds were at the feeders at lunchtime, and this evening 5 birds were feeding at twilight.
