Eagles @ LEMP - 06 Feb 2010

I drove down to Lake Erie Metropark and the Pt. Mouillee HQ area this afternoon to take advantage of the sunny (but cold) skies. Pt. Mouillee was quiet: the gate entrance had its share of American Tree Sparrows, White-throated Sparrows, and Black-capped Chickadees, but I failed to find the Fox Sparrow reported earlier by Pat Gamburd. The Huron River was frozen, so there were no waterfowl or gulls about. I checked the spruce trees next to the boat launch but failed to find the American Pipit also found by Pat.

As I drove back south toward Lake Erie Metropark I spotted a pair of juvenile Bald Eagles flying over a small amount of open water. One bird was perched on a snag just off behind a house, but severely backlit, so photographs were useless. I did pull over briefly to catch one bird soaring overhead.

I drove down to boat launch to watch several dozen Mute Swans swimming among several Common Goldeneye and Bufflehead. Across the channel a small flock of Common Mergansers were flying by while up to 8 Bald Eagles swooped in and out of scattering flocks of ducks to look for fish. I sat the park bench for 30 min. or so waiting for few birds to fly close enough to photograph, but they stayed well over the water. I did capture a fly-by Great Black-backed Gull.

Returning home I found a Red-tailed Hawk perched atop a light pole across the street.
