Arrived in Ft. Lauderdale at 9:30 am and waited for our bus ride to the Norwegian Dawn. It was sunny but a cool 46 F. Cool enough for the locals to complain, but not us. It was sunny! And, how many times does both your bags come off the plane right next to each other?
We proceeded to the Port of Miami from Ft. Lauderdale by bus. Along the way I spotted Osprey, American Kestrel, Boat-tailed Grackles, Laughing Gull, Herring Gulls, Turkey Vultures, and European Starlings. We then boarded the ship shortly after 1 pm, but since our room was not ready we headed to the Pearly King’s Pub and christened our cruise w/ a beer. At 3:30 pm we were required to participate in sinking drills, so we grabbed our life jackets and trudged down to Deck 7.
In order to leave the harbor we had to move up the channel and turn around. This provided some nice views of the surrounding Miami skyline, and gave passersby a chance to stop and admire the cruise ship as it headed out to sea. Along the way we got a quick look at Miami’s South Beach.
The only birds in the port were Laughing Gulls and Royal Terns, a couple of Brown Pelicans near the mouth of the channel, and a flock of White Ibis that flew across the harbor to our left. Otherwise, we saw little in the way of birds.
