Fisherman's Island SP - 01 May 2010
Robin and I drove up to the condo Friday afternoon for a quick overnite stay. Heavy rains during the night brought clouds and humidity early Saturday morning.
We drove up to Fisherman's Island State Park (US-31 just s. of Charlevoix). A quick scan of the lake produced several Red-breasted Mergansers. First warblers of the year included a Black-throated Green and a Nashville Warbler.
As we continued into the park we found four Greater Yellowlegs along the shoreline. I got out and was able to digiscope a single bird atop a large boulder, while the other three birds were nearby.
The parking lot at the end of the road had a singing Eastern Phoebe. Although severely backlit I managed a decent digiscoped image.
Joining Robin at the beach we walked the dunes hoping to flush a sparrow or two, but saw none. So I turned my attention to the nearby vegetation and several Red Admiral Butterflies.
As we left the park I heard the calls of Black-and-White Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, and a Yellow Warbler.
An Eastern Bluebird perched overhead and provided some quick photos from inside the car with the D300.

I dropped Robin off at the condo and made a quick run to nearby fields to look for grassland species. Eastern Meadowlarks were abundant, as were Savannah Sparrows, but no Bobolinks or Grasshopper Sparrows yet. I digiscoped this Savannah Sparrow from about 60 feet away in the mid-afternoon sunlight.
