Grandfather Mountain - 18 Jun 2010

I arrived at the entrance to Grandfather Mountain (just outside of Boone, NC) at 8 am and waited for the gates to open. A Red-eyed Vireo was singing from across the parking lot as I waited, and then was first to head into the park.

I stopped at the Museum and walked down to the rehabilitation exhibits, where a Golden Eagle was being housed. Although this is a captive bird, it is stunningly majestic, and was a thrill to see.

Farther up the road I hiked the trail to the summit of the swinging bridge, and had the chance to see and photograph immature Dark-eyed Juncos in better light than yesterday.

Tree Swallows were also flying about, and one individual made for a nice digiscoping subject in the morning sunlight.

The trail itself held much the same birds as yesterday: Canada Warbler, Black-throated Green Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler, and Rufous-sided Towhee. More Red-eyed Vireos were also about, but impossible to find.

I returned to the museum just long enough to grab a couple of quick photos of a Ruby-throated Hummingbird at one of the feeders.
