Shorebirds numbers growing - 20 Aug 2011

This juvenile Semipalmated Plover was one of several digiscoped in Cell 3 at Pt. Mouillee!

Cell 3 at Pt. Mouillee is finally starting to produce some good shorebirds.  Numbers are steadily growing, and diversity is gradually increasing.  This morning I found a Baird's Sandpiper close to shore.  Unfortunately, light was low and shutter speeds were insufficient to get sharp captures.

Highlights included a Least Sandpiper with a yellow leg tag and a periwinkle band on its tarsus, Solitary Sandpipers, flyover Sandhill Cranes, Short-billed Dowitchers (mostly juvies), a possible Long-billed Dowitcher (undergoing molt), Stilt Sandpipers, Pectoral Sandpipers, Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs.  Karl Overman had reported a Red Knot yesterday, but I was unable to relocate it.

Non-bird sightings included the following butterflies: Viceroy, Cabbage White, and Cloud Sulphur.
