Winter Waterfowling - 13 Jan 2015

The cold snap of the last two weeks have choked the Detroit River w/ ice. The only open water on the  river could be found around Mud Island in Ecorse.

Twelve Bald Eagles were the highlight! Most were in the trees around the island, but several were flying, including this one that flew directly at me during the noon hour.

A raft of approximately 3000 Canvasback and Redhead were choking the small amount of open water along the south end of Mud Island. I created this panorama from about 30 frames!

Nearby ducks included several Red-breasted Mergansers and a nice Common Goldeneye drake (at top).
