Ring-necked Pheasant - 26 May 2018
I took a ride out to Willow Run Airport this morning to look for Upland Sandpiper. Nope. I did see Savannah Sparrow, Eastern Meadowlark, Bobolink, and Northern Rough-winged Swallow.

I then made a swing through Oakwood Metropark. This male Ring-necked Pheasant popped out of the grass near the road and allowed me to photograph it from inside the car.
Other birds heard or seen included Eastern Towhee, Field Sparrow, Song Sparrow, House Wren, Northern Waterthrush, and Yellow Warbler.

Exquisite Pheasant!
ReplyDeleteI have been a long time fan of your pics. I am just a novice bird watcher, mostly in my back yard here in Taylor.
I have had some pretty traumatic discoveries over the past 6 weeks that I thought I would ask you about.
5 weeks ago i found a male sparrow hanging from his neck by a very thin thread that had snagged on a rough branch, in his struggles he must have caused the thread to embed deeper & deeper around his neck, he was upside down & very dead.
Yesterday early morning in the back yard mulberry tree was a juvenile sparrow who had a very thin blue thread entwined around its leg, snagged on a branch. I was able to free him, but he had nearly ripped the tiny leg from his body. I had to do the humane thing (which killed me) as there was nothing but a faint skinny tendon left holding the already thin leg to the body. I do not know where they are getting these threads, in the past 4 years I've been feeding & observing my backyard crew, i've never seen anything like this!
SO I am asking you, have you witnessed this before, or have heard of these kinds of deaths?
