Spring Emerging at Brownton - 20 Apr 2019

The past two weeks have seen a drastic change in both flora and fauna here at Brownton Abbey. With soaking rains the past two days I've had time to catch up on some of the recent sightings here in the yard and in the field under the power lines, where Chorus and Wood Frogs have given way to Spring Peepers and American Toads (it's been a good year for amphibians with all of the standing water).

On the 12th an adult Cooper's Hawk made not one, but two passes through the yard. What was unusual was the high winds making it float as it flew directly from the field toward the back window and only veering to its right at the very last moment before hitting the house.

Great Egret and Great Blue Herons made fly-overs on the 13th. This was also the first sighting of a suspected Dark-eyed Junco X White-throated Sparrow hybrid. Four Red-tailed Hawks soaring directly over the house was a nice surprise, as were visits from both Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches.

The 14th of April brought rain and sleet and a Purple Finch to the oriole feeder (filled with sunflower oilers).  First one all winter!

This past weekend's rain brought a pair of singing Eastern Towhees to the yard. Also, a pair of White-throated Sparrows. And, within moments of each other, an Eastern Phoebe and Field Sparrow made passes through the yard. Neither bird stayed long enough for photos.

I still have 3 Dark-eyed Juncos as of the 20th.
