Frosty Morning and Bluebirds! - 06 Apr 2020

The morning came with clear skies and frost covering the ground. I was sitting at the computer and noticed that the rising Sun was hitting the willows and causing some glowing flower-tips. So, I grabbed the camera and took a few photos before deciding to actually grab the coat and go for an actual walk out back.

Quinlan Prairie was covered in frost, as were the numerous small spider webs covering the ground. I spent some time photographing the webs using the Sony a9 and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3. Even more webs awaited me in the woods out back.

Trails were wet, and it was chilly, but the Sun was shining, and the birds were singing; American Robins, Northern Cardinals, Tufted Titmouse, American Goldfinch, and House Finches.

As I walked the trail I heard an Eastern Bluebird singing overhead. Sure enough, a nice male was perched high up in the trees and singing. I took a few photos as it foraged on cranberries.

A bit farther along the trail an Eastern Towhee was singing its "Drink-Your-Teeeeeea". I managed to get a couple keepers before it flew off.

Best part of the trip was coming back through the field and seeing a pair of Eastern Bluebirds checking out the bluebird box along the edge of the prairie. I had just checked the box minutes before and found it empty, so it was ready for them. One of the other boxes had what I believe to the start of a Black-capped Chickadee nest.

An hour or so after returning to the house I spotted the towhee under the feeders and got a couple digiscoped images through the back window.

A nice morning. Happy Bird-day, Liz!
