Marvelous Performance - 28 Nov 2020

After yesterday's abysmal performance capturing BIF using the Sony a7RIV and 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS lens I headed back out for redemption. This time I paired the a7RIV w/ the 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS. What a difference!

A flock of Bonaparte's Gulls at Pt. Mouillee HQ were severely backlit for the most part, but allowed me the opportunity to test tracking and autofocus on the a7RIV w/o changing any settings. The camera performed marvelously. Approximately 90-95% keeper rate at 400mm and APS-C mode (EFL~560mm).  I only deleted a handful of the ~1500 images I took. All images were AUTO-ISO to maintain 1/2000 sec. at f/9 (forgot to change to f/5.6); most were at ISO 1000 or lower.

This combo is a keeper and will remain from here on out. I'll be able to confidently use it for BIFs when the camera is at hand.
