Yard Bird #110 - 31 Jan 2022
This afternoon I took notice of a raptor dropping into the field behind the house. I suspected a Cooper's Hawk or a Red-tailed Hawk, but was pleasantly surprised when it flew up and landed in the cottonwoods at the back of the field. Red-shouldered Hawk!
The adult bird showed a brown head and red-brown bib over a red-feathered chest that easily could've been a Cooper's Hawk or even a Red-tailed Hawk. But the white spotting on the wings and the thick tail bands helped pushed the ID toward Red-shouldered.
It then took flight and the diagnostic spotting on the wings and the bright red shoulders help confirm!
I was also happy that the Sony a1 managed to lock focus despite shooting through the hedges. I managed a number of very acceptable flight shots!
Yard bird #110 was a nice addition after last year's additons: Whip-por-Will, Orchard Oriole, Great-crested Flycatcher, and Golden-crowned Kinglet.
