Eurasian Wigeon - 20 Mar 2022
"The quality of a bird is inversely proportional to the quality of the image that captured it."
Here is my proof. Justin Labadie and Bobbie Irwin found a Eurasian Wigeon in the Vermet Unit of Pt. Mouillee SGA in Monroe Co., MI this morning. With additional thanks to Bob Bochenik and Karl Overman I was able to relocate this evening. It wasn't easy. One bird among thousands is tough to locate, but I managed to find it near the tail end of a half-mile raft of Redhead, Lesser Scaup, Greater Scaup, Gadwall, Ring-necked Duck, and American Wigeon. I could only digiscope it from almost ½-mile away.
I missed out on a Slaty-backed Gull in Cell 4 of the Banana Unit as I only learned about it after I was heading back to the car. At least I had better luck w/ the local waterfowl.
A Lesser Scaup swam out from among the dredging vessels docked at the south end of Cell 4.
Fly-by Lesser and Greater Scaup gave me the opportunity to illustrate the differences in the amount of white in the secondaries (both) and primaries (Greater only).
