Red-tailed Hawks - 30 Oct 2022
Robin and I were in Chicago Friday and Saturday. As usual, Justin Labadie found a flock of Evening Grosbeaks in his yard while I was out of town. Last time I was out of town he had found North America's first Common Redshank. So, when I got home Sunday morning the first thing I did was build a platform feeder; unlike Justin I did not have Evening Grosbeaks.
I did want to go birding first thing Sunday morning, but a dense fog suspended Hawk Watch at Detroit River. So, I spent a few minutes photographing our resident Eastern Screech Owl that had poked its head out at 8 am.

By noon the fog had lifted and skies had cleared. I headed down to Lake Erie Metropark just in time to catch a Golden Eagle make its last circle over the channel north of the hawk watch site. Brian Beauchene had his scope on it so I managed to get my bins on it for fraction before it moved out of view.
For the next half hour or so a steady stream of Red-tailed Hawks moved overhead as clouds moved in. They were deeply backlit so I had to settle on silhouette photos, but a few came out.
The action suddenly stopped when the winds shifted to a more southerly direction. With little to no birds moving we turned attention to a small flock of Bonaparte's Gulls that flew into the area from Lake Erie.
I headed home around 3:30 pm just in time to listen to the Lions lose. Again.
