Sandhill Crane - 30 Jun 2023

Today a new Michigan Law takes affect that prohibits the use of a cellular phone while operating a motorized vehicle. So, here I am, heading out of the driveway to pick up some bird seed when I spot a Sandhill Crane at the house of Mark and Diane Hepner five doors down the street! The bird was just chilling on the grass in front of their house, so I stopped and grabbed the phone to get a few pics. It was then I realized I'd just broke the law...

A 40 lb. bag of sunflower seed later I was driving back down the street when I saw the Hepners standing next to the Sandhill Crane and chatting w/ another neighbor. I congratulated them and offered to come back w the camera to get some pics.

Good thing that I did, since they wanted to get their cars out of the driveway, but the crane was now chilling in their driveway in front of both cars. So, after a few pics w/ the 600/4 lens I offered to escort the crane to the pond at the rear of their house (the small pond at the entrance to Bridgewater off Long Lake Dr.).

Once safely relocated I ran home to ID the leg band on its right leg. I went to www.bandreport.gov (federal bird banding database) and entered the 9-digit number (#1088-10573).

Almost immediately I received an email w/ the following information:
