Fort Necessity, PA - 30 Jul 2023

Robin and I are in the mountains of Farmington, Pennsylvania this week for a Foundry Class at the Touchstone Center for Arts. We are staying at the Summit Inn nearby and have a gorgeous view of Morgantown, PA and Uniontown, PA in the valley below.

After arriving yesterday afternoon we had today to do a little exploring. Beside looking for eating places nearby we stopped at Fort Necessity Battlefield just up the road (4 mi) from the Inn. This was George Washington's first command as an officer in the British Army, and the battle here was a fight between French, British and Native Americans as part of the French and Indian War and prelude to the Revolutionary War.  Washington surrendered to the French and was allowed to withdraw from the fort that was later occupied and burned by the French.

Today, the field surrounding the remnants were quiet save for the calls of Indigo Buntings and Eastern Towhees. A Common Yellowthroat also greeted us as we walked the short distance to the fort.

Prior to stopping here we drove to the Picnic Area and had a nice half-hour exploration of the mountain forest. An Acadian Flycatcher was calling in the distance, but cell service (none) prevented me from trying to call it in. An Eastern Wood-Pewee and Blue Jay were the only other birds calling this morning. I therefore spent some time photographing some of the vegetation in the low light.

Pretty place!
