Marsh Trillers - 27 Jul 2023
I drove down to Pt. Mouillee SGA this morning with no particular target bird(s). Parking at Mouillee Creek I rode around to the Walpatich and Laughtenschlager Units before taking the North Causeway to the Banana.
Marsh Wrens were active in the calm, humid cattail marsh this morning. I managed to see a pair of birds next to the trail and one even cooperated for pics.
Swamp Sparrows were also trilling. This one staged on a cattail for a minute before flying off. Low shutter Speeds and distance made digiscoping difficult.
Our crippled Tundra Swan was resting in the Nelson Unit and remained behind after ~200 Mallard took off from the field. I took some digiscoped images before it got up and limped off. Its neck is not improving and the bird is practically carrying its head on its shoulders.
American Lotus are in full bloom along the Huron River and the North Causeway.
Lesser Scaup and at least one Canvasback continue in Cell 4.
Shorebirds numbers were low in Cell 3 with only a few dozen Semipalmated Sandpipers and a couple Lesser Yellowlegs.
No Black Terns were seen this morning.
