Summer Winter Wren - 12 Jul 2023

Robin and I came up to Mackinac Island for a quick two-day retreat on Monday. We drove north early in the morning, had lunch at Audies Restaurant, then took Shepler's across the Straits to the island. A 2-night stay at Mission Point put us on the quiet side of the island with a gorgeous view of the Straights.

This morning I took a short walk around the grounds and just up the road at Mackinac Island State Park. We had watched the All-Star Game last night and then went out to look for Northern Lights, but all we got was a soaked tennis shoe. Turns out Robin stepped in the only 2'x3' puddle in the whole field...

Red-eyed Vireos and Cedar Waxwings were calling from the trees around the Inn, and as I walked the road I picked up Cape May Warbler and Black-and-White Warbler from the cedars lining the road. When I reached the stairs to the Arch Rocks I heard the distinct, high-pitched call of a Winter Wren. Hiking the stairs I managed to run into a family of 4 Winter Wrens that entertained me for several minutes overhead in the cedars and at eye-level. I managed a few pics.

Returning to the field across from the Mission Point Resort I took some pics of the flowers growing in the grass.

Before returning home we had breakfast at the Inn, and were entertained by Red-eyed Vireos, Yellow Warbler, Cedar Waxwing and Gray Catbird feeding in the cherry tree right outside our window.
