Ground-level Warblers - 30 Aug 2023

Overnight storms brought a mini cold front this morning. Skies were cloudy and it was a cool 60F with a light breeze. I hoped that this weather might bring the warblers down to ground level, and I was right.

Birds were concentrated but scattered, so I needed to walk a lot of trails to find them. But, once I did find them their numbers were massive!

Red-eyed Vireos continue to show well.

Chestnut-sided Warblers continue in good numbers.

A cooperative Black-throated Green Warbler. Finally.

Eastern Wood Pewee continue to vocalize and appear in the clearings.

An American Redstart that actually stopped long enough for a quick pic.

My first Blackpoll Warbler of the fall. Note the orange feet and more pronounced streaked back.

Compare with Bay-breasted Warbler w/ its black feet and less-pronounced streaked back.

Black and White Warbler.

Tennessee Warblers also continue in good numbers.

American Goldfinch doing its late summer feasting on thistle.

Just below a ground-feeding Bay-breasted Warbler was flashing its peachy sides and showed well against the dark understory.

I would see a Wilson's Warbler and several Black-throated Blue Warblers but they did not lend themselves to photographing. I'll try again tomorrow...
