First Juncos of Fall - 30 Sep 2023

An evening walk at Elizabeth Park in Trenton yielded few birds. There were more Homecoming dresses that birds this warm evening.

The middle trails were quiet with only Black Squirrels being seen. I made a single loop of the perimeter and found a Common Yellowthroat foraging low in the brush at the north end of the park.

As I was leaving I saw the flashes of white outer tail feathers from a flock of 6 small sparrows and knew immediately that Dark-eyed Juncos had returned!

I'd even see a single junco at the Humbug Marsh Unit at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge. It, and a single Marsh Wren, were the only birds seen just before dark.
