Walking Erie Marsh - 02 Jan 2024
I took a drive down to Erie Marsh Preserve this morning to look for a couple of Least Sandpipers that were reported yesterday by Andrew Simon. They continue to be seen since Allen Chartier first reported them on our Monroe, MI CBC December 16, 2023.
I would dip on the Least Sandpipers, but would see 14 Killdeer in the mudflats opposite the cabins at the entrance to the preserve. Clouds, wind and low light would prevent any photography this morning. I'd walk 1.5 miles out and find a mix of Mallard, Canada Geese, a Northern Harrier and several Bald Eagles. Small flocks of American Goldfinch, American Tree Sparrow, and Red-winged Blackbirds would keep the walk somewhat interesting. Luckily temps were hovering at 30F so the mud was hard enough to walk; another few degrees and it would be a painful, boggy mess...
