Blue-winged Warbler - 26 Aug 2024
I had to run into Wyandotte this morning so I swung by Elizabeth Park on the way home to check for warblers. Skies were clear and it was going to be a scorcher today; high humidity, 90F, no wind. It was already 75F at 9 am and the mosquitos were reminding me of it.
I walked the woods near the maintenance yard and zoo and happened upon a pair of Indian Peafowl females that were all-white. They were being escorted by a beautiful blue Peacock, and all three were trying to make their way back into the zoo fencing. So, they hopped up on the rows of temporary fencing then flew over the top of the fence to the rooftop of the barn. But not before I got a few pics of the male.
I made a loop around trails but failed to find any warblers. It wasn't until I reached the north end a second time that I spotted movement in the bushes and trees. A Wilson's Warbler was foraging at eye level but flew off before I could get the 600/4 lens on it. But, I turned to the next closest bird and it happened to be a lovely Blue-winged Warbler (one of my target birds)!
I couldn't ask for a better pose.
Birds were moving fast, so I cursed myself for not being able to focus on a Canada Warbler nearby. With birds flushing from every direction I couldn't decide which way to point the camera. I finally found a pair of Chestnut-sided Warblers chasing each other relatively close enough to photograph.
Several Bay-breasted Warblers were foraging close enough, as well.
