A Lovely, Slow Morning - 04 Oct 2024

A walk around Humbug Marsh yielded no warblers this morning, but a Swamp Sparrow along the shoreline of the Monguagon Delta was a nice find. Carolina Wrens were singing near the entrance to the short loop, and a steady stream of 350 Double-crested Cormorants along the Detroit River were the highlights.

I then drove over to Lake Erie Metropark where I checked the mudflats west of the Wave Pool. Yesterday Justin Labadie had reported Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs so I was hoping to see either. Only Killdeer were seen (a large flock of yellowlegs and snipe would fly in later in the afternoon).

The maintenance road had a singing Carolina Wren and several Swamp Sparrows, and I managed to photograph 6 Common Gallinule juveniles before they flew off.

This Bronze Copper gave me a quick view as I headed back to the car.

A nice flock of Great Egrets were in the pond as I drove over to the Boat Launch and the Detroit River Hawk Watch. I only stayed a couple hours but did get impressive flights of Blue Jays, several Sharp-shinned Hawks and Turkey Vultures on a relatively slow day.
