A Slower Day at Hawk Watch - 08 Oct 2024
I came back to the Detroit River Hawk Watch this afternoon with the hopes of seeing another Swainson's Hawk, or at least another nice flight of Turkey Vultures. I get neither, but a few Turkey Vultures were kettling, and others were streaming "high" overhead. This Cooper's Hawk soared overhead long enough to get a few pics; check out the dark cap and nape, and thick white jess's of the legs.
Third-year Bald Eagle got a few people excited for the first Golden Eagle of the season, but too much white underwing...
A couple of Northern Harrier passed to the south but not quite close enough (convection currents played havoc with the camera).
The next few days will see cooler temps and winds switching around more to the north. Hurricane Milton is growing to a Category 5 and is expected to hit Florida Wednesday night.
