We arrived in port shortly before 7 am and docked in Kahului. We’d be here for the next 2 full days. Our side of the boat had a view of the harbor and shoreline, as well as the port with its many Matson shipping containers and dock workers; it was noisy.
The ocean was quiet save for the occasional Western Cattle Egret or Black-necked Stilt fly-by.

While driving out of port we passed the Kahanna Ponds where I was able to spot 3 Nene (Hawaiin Goose), several Pacific Golden Plovers, and 13 Black-necked (Hawaiin) Stilts. I was hoping to spend the next morning checking out the ponds as it was only 0.7 mi from the ship, but I promised Robin I’d stay on board.

Our first stop was the plantation where we were given a trolley tour of the farm and its many tree / crop fields. Highlight birds were Common Myna, Warbling White-eye, House Finches, Zebra Dove, Spotted Dove, Chestnut Munia, and a pair of Northern Cardinals. Java Sparrows were also abundant here.

We then stopped by the Maui Ocean Center and aquariums, and we got to see many tidal species and aquarium fish, sharks, turtles and corals.
Outside it was too windy to look for birds so we shared a snack and bought some long-sleeve sweaters for our days on the ship.
We’d be back onboard by 2 pm. Somewhere along the way I lost my Disney Band…
