Migrants are Moving - 20 Apr 2025

Skies were clear and winds were calm this morning at Elizabeth Park. Birds were singing so I played the Merlin App to see if it could pick up what I was hearing. Yes and no.

Merlin picked up the Red-winged Blackbirds and Red-bellied Woodpecker, but missed the Northern Flicker and Ruby-crowned Kinglets. It also found a Marsh Wren but I suspect that it was the Winter Wren that I heard.

Bobby Irwin reported Great Horned Owl chicks but I couldn't relocate them. One Yellow-rumped Warbler was all I could see of the early migrants.

This Hermit Thrush was the first of several seen shooting through the understory along with American Robins and White-throated Sparrows.

Merlin also missed the Brown-headed Cowbirds

A quick stop at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge turned up a nice Carolina Wren flying by with grass in its mouth, but this American Robin was the only photo highlight.
