Warblers in the Wind - 29 Apr 2025
High winds were forecasted for today with storms and cold temps coming for the next couple of days. I decided to run down to Magee Marsh, anyway. Perhaps I could get there and walk the boardwalk before the winds got really strong. Nope.
Winds were already blowing 20 - 30 mph at 7:30 am under mostly cloudy skies. The parking lot at Magee was relatively quiet in terms of car numbers (dozen or so) and the wind was blowing in off the lake near the east end of the boardwalk. Still, song was in the air.
Yellow Warblers were the bird of the day. I'd see at least a dozen and hear them all morning long.
I saw another photographer photographing something on the ground next to the boardwalk and suspected a waterthrush, and sure enough a Northern Waterthrush was foraging nearby. It was skulky and difficult to get any clear shots, but I managed a decent capture. I'd hear and see several more during my walk toward the west end of the boardwalk.
Several Carpenter Bees were hovering over the boardwalk ahead of me so I attempted some photos. I thought they were just Bumble Bees at first, but then saw the yellow face while reviewing photos.
A pair of Northern Parula were a nice find. They were a bit high overhead, though.
Hermit Thrushes are still around. Several flew through the thickest of the understory but I caught this one posing next to the boardwalk near the west end.
A singing Black-throated Green Warbler was a nice find. It foraged relatively close by and gave me my best looks of the day.
A Prothonotary Warbler was reported by a passerby and sure enough was foraging overhead by the west end of the big loop. Unfortunately, it did not cooperate well and I managed only one decent pic.
Warbling Vireos were singing along the east side of the boardwalk.
My mystery bird of the morning was this drab warbler that I suspect may be Orange-crowned Warbler.

I'd swing through Howard Marsh on the way home but did not see anything of interest. The winds were producing white-caps on the inland ponds.
